Join Laurel Simmons as your tour director on a Wine Detour of fabulous wineries, food, and magical places. Based out of Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, France, you’ll experience wine behind the scenes like you never have before! As you travel, Laurel will share her insights on the wines and the wineries that you’ll be visiting. You’ll taste the wine and the food, and experience the sensations of Provence – and even have a special cooking class in an old olive mill.

Where will you be staying? We are booked to stay at the Mercure Avignon Centre Palais des Papes Hotel and the Hotel Saint Christophe in the heart of Aix-en-Provence.

How many people are going? Maximum 14... so be sure to book your place now.

Activity level: Moderate. You will be climbing up and down stairs, and walking over cobblestones and rough ground. Good walking shoes/light hiking boots are highly recommended!

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Marseille, be picked up at the airport and transferred to the Hotel Saint Christophe in Aix-en-Provence where you’ll enjoy a welcome reception with wine and canapes in the evening.

Day 2: A full day of visiting wineries close to the Mediterranean coast in Bandol and Cassis. You’ll tour, taste wine, and have lunch at a winery in Bandol and then move on to explore a winery by the sea in Cassis.

Day 3: Enjoy a free morning to explore Aix-en-Provence and then visit a winery for a tour, tastings and dinner at Domaine des Beates.

Day 4: Transfer to the Hotel Mercure Avignon Centre in Avignon. Visit Chateau Fontvert for wine, enjoy lunch at a Provencal restaurant and visit a local chateau for a glimpse of times gone by.

Day 5: Although you can spend the day by yourself in Avignon, we highly recommend you join the group to visit one of the top 10 markets in Provence – that of L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue. A full market only on Sundays, this market is meant for people-watching, shopping for everything you can think of, antique hunting, and more! And upon your return to Avignon, you’ll still have late afternoon and evening to explore the city of the popes on your own.

Day 6: A full day in the Avignon area where we’ll visit the Chateau de Tarascon, visit a winery making wine the way the Romans did, and complete the day with olive oil tastings, a cooking class, and dinner at an olive oil mill.

Day 7: A full day in the Saint Remy de Provence area. Visit a winery, lunch in Saint Remy and visit the Glanum archeological site. Dinner in Avignon upon your return.

Day 8: Visit Orange and its magnificent Roman amphitheatre. Taste wine and have lunch in beautiful 19thC castle near Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Explore Chateauneuf-du-Pape on a guided walking tour. Finish the visit with a wine and chocolate tasting. Enjoy dinner in Avignon.

Day 9: Visit the Camargue region at the delta of the Rhone River. Tour and lunch in Aigues-Mortes, ride the train around salt marshes, and explore the “sand wines” of the Camargue in a winery by the sea. Return to Avignon for a farewell reception.

Day 10: Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the Marseille airport.
